The PSHE Association defines personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) as:
- …a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives, now and in the future
Through the school’s curriculum we aim to equip children with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. The PSHE curriculum includes drug education, financial education, sex and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle. PSHE is closely linked to British Values within the school.
PSHE forms part of our planned curriculum but is also fundamental in creating our positive school ethos. Work centres on helping children understand about relationships, their own feelings and issues relating to growing up e.g. friendships and personal changes. The work is often undertaken in ‘circle time’ where the children have the opportunity to talk about issues. Sex and Relationships Education is an integral part of the PSHE curriculum. This area is taught in line with our school policy – a copy of which is available on request.
Our children are encouraged to care for each other and the world in which they live. They have opportunities to learn pastoral and social skills, to try new roles and to develop relationships. The secure environment that the school provides allows the children to develop independence and responsibility so that they become increasingly more able to make informed decisions. It is our intention that all children should have a positive self-image and that they should be able to develop a healthy lifestyle through the activities offered and the many ways they are taught.
