FOUNDATION STAGE – WELCOME TO MOTCOMBE SCHOOL BOOKLET (please click the ‘Select Language’ button at the bottom of this page if you require a translation)
Welcome to Motcombe!
Coming into school
School starts at 8.50am. Please follow the green path on the right-hand side of the school building and find your child’s classroom. The gate will have your child’s class name on. Please wait on the path until the teacher opens the gate in the morning.
Outside the children’s classrooms there are clipboards for you to write on if your child is going home with someone different. Please let us know if your child is being picked up by another family member, or going home with a friend, or going to a club. If you forget to write this down in the morning, please phone the school office to let them know and they will pass on the message. If we have not been informed that your child is going home with someone else and someone else arrives to pick them up, we will not let your child go with them until we have heard from you that this is your intention. We will phone you to ask you to confirm that you want your child to go home with this person. This ensures that we do not let any children go home with anyone they shouldn’t be. Keeping the children safe is our top priority.
There is another clipboard outside the classrooms for you to indicate your child’s lunch choices. Children each day have a choice of packed lunch or school dinner. Within the school dinner there are three options: the main meal, the vegetarian option and a jacket potato. Children may choose beans, cheese or tuna on their jacket potato. If you would like your child to have the vegetarian option or a jacket potato, please indicate this on the clipboard. You do not need to tick if your child would like the main school meal, only the vegetarian option or the jacket potato. The menu will be displayed for you to choose from each day. School dinners are free for all children in Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2.
If your child has specific dietary requirements please let us know.
Our school uniform colours are grey and royal blue. The children may also wear white polo shirts. You do not need to have the uniform with our logo and you can purchase our school colours in most of the local supermarkets. If you do wish to buy uniform with a logo please visit the School Trends website:
Children will also need shorts and t-shirt for PE. These can be any colour, but the shorts must not have pockets and the t-shirt must not have buttons. Children in Foundation Stage will not need PE footwear until the summer term. In the summer term, please send in trainers with Velcro straps, rather than laces.
Children in Foundation Stage will need a pair of wellies in school. We spend a lot of time playing and learning outside on the patio, in the Forest Zone and in the Mud Zone and we go outside in all weathers, if children want to.
Book bags (£5) and water bottles (£2) are available from the school office.
Please make sure that all clothes, wellies, water bottles and book bags are clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Children are entitled to free school milk until their 5th birthday. If you would like your child to have milk each day at school, please register online.
We provide a healthy snack of fruit or vegetables each day. Please make sure your child brings in a water bottle each day. Water bottles must only be filled with water, rather than any other kind of drink.
The end of the day
Please wait on the green path outside your child’s classroom to pick up your child at the end of the day. The school day ends at 3.00pm. Please contact us to let us know if you will be late. If your child has not been picked up from school by 3.15pm, they will go down to Fireflies after-school club and there will be a charge of £11.00 for the session.
If your child cannot attend school (for whatever reason) please telephone the school before 9.00am every day of absence.
When your child has had 3 separate periods of absence, we will notify you that we will require medical evidence for any further periods of absence due to illness. Medical evidence may be in the form of a medical appointment letter from the hospital, a doctor’s appointment card signed by the doctor’s receptionist or a photocopy or photograph of prescribed medication.
We expect any family holidays to be taken during school holiday times, not during term time. Absence from school has an impact on both the academic and social aspects of children’s learning. If an absence is required due to exceptional circumstances, please fill in a withdrawal from learning form which you may collect from the school office, preferably 14 days before the period of absence.
At Motcombe we record the children’s Learning Journeys using Tapestry. This is a web-based tool and enables you to see your child’s learning as it happens. It also allows you to upload photos and posts of your own about your child’s learning and experiences. Each week there will be a home challenge that you may complete with your child at home and upload to Tapestry. Your contributions to Tapestry are so valuable and make a great contribution to your child’s learning and experience of school. Your child’s teacher will give you more information about Tapestry and how to use it.
Each week the school newsletter will be emailed to you. The newsletter is a key way we communicate with you and has important dates and other information on it. It also has a link on it to a special Foundation Stage newsletter which has specific information about what we have been getting up to each week in Foundation stage, including photos, as well as about upcoming events and other important information. It is also where we post the weekly home challenge for you to do with your child each weekend. These are optional but often feed into or consolidate the week’s learning, so are very helpful to do. Please do make sure you look at the newsletters each week so you don’t miss out on any information. They are also available on the website and can be translated there.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
We are looking forward to working in partnership with you during your child’s first years at school.
